Thx great info

chalkomatas says:

The most toxic with IT departments (as with any other job, but especially with IT) could be the people of the IT team themselves. The head of the team and the way you are treated is the key for liking or hating the job. Indeed, the salaries are the worst in relation to other company staff, you are forced to work overtime and sometimes at night and the weekends. And of course you always feel expendable since you can be easily replaced. Among the positives, is that you learn many new things and the personal satisfaction you feel when resolving complex issues. Well, if you are young, tolerant and find it hard to pursue a software programming career which is the best among the computing branches, it's not too bad. But you have to bear in mind that it's a little bit hard to do that for your whole working life.

Brian Woods says:

I don't find many points being made.

Axel Tevez says:

This hits me very deep, i´m from Argentina. Technical support in company that makes a lot of money, my pay is not fair but it is what i could achieve and i hope to find something better.

MegaMiir says:

I am older and just want to get in. Lol

InfinityLives says:

I have no idea how this is offensive.

A B says:

truth, i feel your pain too, being my self in that job position as well for many years.

VF1Skullangel says:

I'm looking at switching from HVAC to IT. I'm making 13 an hour doing hvac. I'm okay with low wages getting into IT because at least I'm not killing myself in the heat.

OneBlurryLens says:

Over the last few decades IT Support/Helpdesk Levels 1 and 2 have evolved into straight up dead-end jobs. the only way to advance was to either transfer to sys/network admin roles or get into management. but not every IT Tech wants to be a manager no matter how much or little money goes into the role. some people end up leaving the IT world all together and pursue other interests.
if you end up getting caught in the downward spiral (gravitational pull) of IT Level 1/2 hell hoping to find that sys admin job or management opportunity you might find yourself waking up like Rumpelstiltskin and realizing 10-15-20 years have passed with nothing to show for it.
longevity in IT Support is unforgiving and ungrateful.
as for the money, because, who doesn't want to get paid? the devaluing of IT Support roles is also reflected in the pay. most tech's who don't want go into management or there next level work and just want to do the work, get paid and go home to their lives have seen these Level 1/2 roles cap out on pay with nowhere to go since most companies want to keep those job functions as cheap as possible. so techs that just want to do tech stuff for the rest of their careers turns into a dead-end future. of course, there's nothing anyone can do about that so it forces them to decide what they want to do. move on or accept what it is and either embrace it or suffer.

truth though, the technology changes. the users change. co-workers change. but the ungratefulness and the delvaluation of the job has and will always be there.

Mud Slide In My Pants says:

I currently work in the HR field and I’m looking to make the jump to IT. I can confirm how the Pay rates can fluctuate. My former employer wanted to fill an entry level but the job description that was posted was basically for a senior tech.

Phillip Woolston says:

I was hired as an Application Specialist for my company and I was making 33 dollars an hour. Our company was bought out by another larger company and they forced us to sign another job description as a Service Desk Analysts Sr. Level. We didn't get a raise but now my opportunities for upward mobility are seriously limited because of my title. I should never have signed it please don't make the same mistake I did. I should have let them fire me for not signing the job description.

RedwallTV says:

LOL 9.83 im on fucking £4.20 an hour thats $5.33 a few months ago I was on 3.90 before the government changed it!
